Marine Corps Enhances its Cyber Cecurity Posture by Activating 3d Network Battalion

25 Feb 2022 | Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command

The Marine Corps is modernizing how it commands and controls its enterprise network.  A dedicated group will now empower the Corps’ ability to prevent and counter adversarial cyber-attacks and minimize network disruptions and outages.

The Marine Corps Cyberspace Operations Group (MCCOG) under Marine Forces Cyberspace Command (MARFORCYBER) activated its newest unit on February 25, 2022, headquartered at Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley. D. Butler in Okinawa Japan, with detachments at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii, plus on-site persistent support to Marine Corps units in South Korea. 3d Network Battalion is the sixth network organization to activate in the past 20 months as part of the MCEN C2 modernization effort. 3d Network Battalion will control the Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN) for all of the Indo Pacific in general support of Marine Forces Pacific units. 3d Network Battalion supports Marine Corps units that are located in three countries, and Hawaii, and it is positioned to provide support to any location within the Indo Pacific where Marines operate.  Lieutenant Colonel Marc Walker commands the Battalion.

“The Marine Corps is modernizing how it operates and defends the cyber domain and creating a unified C2 structure is another step towards that goal,” said Walker, 3d Network Battalion. “With the activation of 3d Network Battalion, the Marine Corps Cyber Operations Group will now have support and defense capabilities that provide secure and reliable enterprise services to warfighters across the globe. Modernizing our network transforms Force Design into a reality.”

In total, the Marine Corps has activated 1st Network Battalion, 2nd Network Battalion Network Activity National Capital Region, Network Activity National  Reserve, and Network Activity Europe/Africa, all reporting to the Commander of MCCOG and under operational control of the Commander MARFORCYBER.  3d Network Battalion’s activation places the unit in general support to Fleet Marine Forces Pacific with the III Marine Expeditionary Force prioritized for operations and exercises.

A modern, standardized enterprise infrastructure will enable the Marine Corps to operationalize information and enable global operations. The MCEN is the Marine Corps’ communications backbone connecting computers, people, and related devices. The network provides secure end‐to‐end communications for all Marines; from the supporting establishment to forward-deployed forces.
